Who we are:
The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames and responsible for the UK’s biggest port - 95 miles of the River Thames from the Estuary to Teddington Lock in west London. We work to keep river users safe, protect and enhance the environment and promote the use of the river for trade and travel.
Our Corporate Affairs team works to raise awareness of the river and the work of the PLA, helping to build a positive reputation and strong relationships with stakeholders.
We’re looking for a Stakeholder Engagement Intern to join the team for a year and gain hands-on experience in public affairs and stakeholder engagement.
The role:
You’ll be supporting our work with external stakeholders, including politicians, partner organisations and our river community. You’ll help track engagement across a range of platforms, write briefings and responses, and assist with speeches and other content.
You’ll also take part in external meetings and events, helping to make sure we stay connected with the people and organisations we work with.
This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career who’s looking to develop their skills and build experience in the sector.

We’re particularly keen to hear from you if:
- You have a degree or degree apprenticeship (ideally in politics, public policy or a related subject)
- You’ve volunteered or worked in a charity, campaign or political environment
- You’re confident speaking with different people and comfortable asking questions
- Have good attention to detail and strong writing skills
- You’ve got good organisational skills and can keep on top of different priorities
- Have some knowledge of how local and regional government works – for example the Greater London Authority, or councils in Kent or Essex
In return, we offer a competitive benefits package:
- 28 days annual leave + Bank Holidays
- Health Cash Plan (Westfield Health)
- Generous pension scheme
- Access to Occupational Health, Mindfulness, Counselling and Physiotherapy
- Cycle to Work Scheme
- Access to MyGymDiscounts
We are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we serve. We particularly encourage applications from people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those who have faced barriers to employment.
