This is an exciting time to be joining the Port of London’s Navigation Systems team as we deliver an ambitious replacement and upgrade programme enhancing standards, security, and user experience. To add to our team, we’re delighted to be able to offer a role for a Field Engineer who will be working as part of a team, focussing on RADAR, VHF and microwave.
What we are looking for:
We’re looking for ‘tech-curious’, competent and dynamic individuals with excellent communication and problem-solving skills. You’ll need to bring the following to be suitable for this role:
Degree in electronic engineering or related discipline.
Minimum 5 years’ hands on experience in a comparable role or setting.
Technically proficient with in-depth knowledge and thorough understanding of RADAR, radio and microwave engineering as well as the design and repair of electrical, electronic and computer-based systems, analogue and digital telecommunications systems.
Ability to work at height to an advanced level and achieve the relevant certifications required to perform the role.
Able to pass medical evaluation and maintain fitness levels to be able to fulfil the job role and to do so safely.
You’ll ensure existing assets are regularly maintained and will also guide the planning, installation and support for our operational critical equipment and systems.
You’ll be required to form part of an on-call rota which, for every one out of four weeks, includes being a point of contact out of hours and working the weekend at our Gravesend base to ensure the availability of services 24/7. Days off in the week are provided before and after the on-call period.
Customer service focus is a must have as well as a methodical approach with great attention to detail. You’ll also need to remain calm under pressure, be a great team player, and be able to work independently and be trusted to take ownership and deliver to agreed deadlines and standards.

We operate some unusual tech and systems, across a wide range of locations, with kit in places not everyone gets to go to. The team regularly work at height and full training, and support is provided to enable you to do this safely and see some great views from our equipment sites.
Who we are:
The Port of London Authority is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames and responsible for 95 miles of the River Thames from the Estuary to Teddington Lock in West London. We work to keep river users safe, protect and enhance the environment and promote the use of the river for trade and travel.
The IT Department plays a critical role in ensuring our end-users have reliable systems that they need to ensure the port continues to operate 24/7/365 and enables navigational safety throughout its area of operation. The Navigation Systems team is part of the IT department. The team’s main function is to provide services to operational teams such as VTS and Pilotage, providing and maintaining systems and hardware for a broad range of services such as RADAR, vessel identification and tracking, radio communications as well as tidal and weather information. We also secure, manage, monitor and maintain our own IP and microwave networks.
